Mom’s Night Out sashays into theatres just in time for Mother’s Day on a bit of a covert mission.It’s billed as a family friendly gal-pal comedy — one that sort of echoes the plot of The Hangover, but with a clear memory of the night in question and the sex, booze and swears traded for G-rated mayhem and mom-positive, feel-good hijinks.But about 10 minutes in, as frazzled young mother of three, Allyson (Grey’s Anatomy Sarah Drew) screeches her car to a halt to wrangle her rambunctious trio into church, the truth comes out.

This is a “Christian comedy” and any mommies out there who may find solace for real-life parenting challenges in a bottle of chardonnay don’t have a prayer.Not that there’s anything wrong with that. And certainly Sony Pictures, which has made $65 million (and climbing) with Heaven is for Real, sees an audience to be served.Perky Allyson is often frantic and occasionally adorable. She has a bad case of the maternal blues and small wonder. A stay-at-home mom whose husband (Sean Astin) is often on the road leaving her to cope, she’s a frustrated wannabe mommy blogger who blames her inability to write a sentence on the fact she hasn’t had a night out with the gal in two years. Two years?Allyson’s self-doubt about her parenting skills, coupled with mania about the life-changing potential of a night out, lead to rallying her two besties for dinner at an upscale restaurant. It’s OK, she has a coupon.
They fret over leaving the kids in the care of their doltish husbands, who they fear are lacking in both parenting skills and common sense. Have they never gotten out of the house before? Apparently not. A joke about the The Shawshank Redemption is made about the kids. Wrong targets.Allyson puts on heels and a modestly sexy little black dress and slides behind the wheel of her minivan with the mommy vanity plates.(Download Moms' Night Out) She’s joined by Izzy (Logan White), whose husband (Robert Amaya) is actually afraid of their children, and Sondra (Everybody Loves Raymond’s Patricia Heaton, also among the movie’s producers), a minister’s wife who is juggling demands of the church with a boundary-pushing teen daughter.The busy sitcom-style plot involving a missing baby, bowling, a biker (country star Trace Adkins) and a chase in a yellow cab helmed by a mouthy Brit (Heaton’s husband, David Hunt) would try the patience of a saint.
Meanwhile, the babysitting men come across as morons next to these heroic-yet-insecure, Scripture-quoting women, who never fail to remind each other that mommying is job one.Too-long, one-joke scenes with a flakey restaurant hostess (Anjelah Johnson) and a dim-witted clerk in a tattoo parlour (Manwell Reyes) are typical of the sins of lengthy excess committed by Mom’s Night Out.A little winding-in from directing brothers Jon Erwin and Andrew Erwin would be welcome.(Download Moms' Night Out) But considering their previous film was the 2011 anti-abortion drama October Baby, dealing in subtlety can’t be expected.The wholly unrealistic portrayal of modern mothers, fathers and even kids in Mom’s Night Out leaves the impression that the filmmakers, like their female leads, really do need to get out more.If you still want to see the PG-rated “Moms’ Night Out” after learning that it includes a tattoo parlor manager named Bones (played by country singer Trace Adkins) offering God-focused parenting advice in a prison waiting area, please go for it. You probably will love the movie.
Me, I almost slid off my seat. Not from laughter—from being pummeled with so much manic noise that it felt like being trapped in a shrillness simulator. “Moms’ Night Out” tries to have fun with three women’s attempt to give themselves a break but does a remarkable job of sabotaging anyone trying to escape their own stress.Sarah Drew (“Grey’s Anatomy”) stars as stay-at-home mom Allyson, a self-described clean freak and wannabe mommy blogger suffering from writers’ block and a major case of the exhausteds.(Download Moms' Night Out) She just can’t understand why everything she thought she ever wanted (including three kids and a husband played by Sean “Rudy” Astin) isn’t making her happy. It’s like no one ever told her that parenting was hard or something.(A moment to acknowledge how incredibly difficult it is to be a parent. Moms in particular are rock stars, and women hold society together.) However, “Moms’ Night Out” has the comic timing of a Disney Channel sitcom crossed with shallow preaching.
Rather than spend more time on how couples can establish better balance, directors Andrew and Jon Erwin (of the awful pro-life drama “October Baby”) spin a revolving door of shenanigans like the pastor’s wife (Patricia Heaton) struggling with auto-correct and Allyson’s pal’s mess of a husband bumbling around with the family bird and yelling mid-car chase, “Say hello to my little sippy cup!” There is also a taser, a recklessly driven minivan and myriad simultaneous misunderstandings.(Download Moms' Night Out) God works in mysterious ways, especially in Moms’ Night Out.The slapstick comedy about an overworked mother whose evening off turns into a zany adventure seems like something from the Judd Apatow factory. It’s actually a Christian movie on the sly, sneaking in the faith before you catch on to the absence of f-bombs and lewd innuendo. If you’re expecting The Hangover, this one comes with a virgin twist.

The Christian agenda here is far more welcoming and less assaultive than previous attempts of its kind. As a movie, Mom’s Night Out has more practical problems than the gentle sermon buried between the lines.Few characters are relatable or believable, with the exception of Allyson (Sarah Drew, putting in fine work), a mother gasping for air amidst the dialed-up chaos of being a happy homemaker.(Download Moms' Night Out) Allyson’s ladies’ night starts off charmingly, playing familiar challenges for laughs (a reservation mix-up over the definition of “next Saturday”). That soon disintegrates into an over-the-top, asinine search for a missing baby that’s full of strained, antic gags and uncommonly polite bikers and alcoholics, all of whom are God’s children, because that would be the point.I was sincerely hoping the whole package would work, but somewhere during the foolishness, I lost faith.
